Job Description:

POSITION TITLE: Director of Engineering, Protection

 

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Reporting to the Vice President of Protection Division, the Director of Engineering, provides leadership to the Protection engineering team and Semiconductor, GDT, MOV, and Multifuse Product Lines. In this role, the Director of Engineering works closely with Product Managers of Semiconductor, Over Voltage Protection and Over Current Protection Product Lines, and the Protection Market Director to ensure the Division's technology roadmap is aligned with market and customers' future requirements. In addition, as the worldwide engineering team leader, the Director of Engineering is responsible for selecting key employees while supporting the development and promotion of internal resources for building and maintaining a team that demonstrates excellence.

 

DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES (End Results Expected):

1.Ensure new product and technology development focuses on technical leadership to deliver market differentiation in targeted market segments.

a. Responsible for the choice of technical direction for the implementation of products to meet the defined market requirements.

b. Plan, recommend and resource appropriate tools and design resources for the New Product Development team.

c. Oversee engineering assessment of new product ideas and estimate time and resources required to develop new products from design concept to a final product.

d. Oversee all technical aspects of design and technology development from product concept and definition through development and transfer to manufacture.

e. Ensure projects are managed with discipline and are completed on time and within the established budget.

2.Organize and direct new product definition and development activities, coordinate with process and global manufacturing engineering with responsibility for all aspects of the new product development process from customer interface to production implementation.

3.Design, maintain and monitor a Technology Roadmap in line with Division and product manager's strategy.

4.Provide technical expertise to all Protection Operations in driving continuous improvement, cost reduction, yield and quality improvement, and supply chain development. This includes technical reviews at Protection production facilities to ensure the Operations has the technical support and expertise needed to produce quality products on time and within customer specifications.

5.Provide technical guidance and leadership to Protection Product Managers to develop and execute short and long-term New Product Development plans for all market segments.

6.Build and maintain an Engineering organization that secures the long-term success of the Division:

a.  Define organization structure, roles, and responsibilities

b. Empower the engineering team to use six-sigma design and process and develop a plan to achieve the desired product quality level.

c. Ensure high quality and detailed engineering documentation required to support successful new product launch or product/process implementation per UL, TS 16949, and QS 9000 / ISO 9001 standards.

d. Advise design groups as they generate new ideas, design/process and promote a creative environment for breakthrough design, patentable ideas, and concepts.

e. Utilize concurrent engineering and worldwide teamwork to ensure best in time development while achieving product quality and performance requirements for time to market.

f. Ensure that employees and managers receive appropriate coaching, mentoring, and training

g. Regularly assess the performance of the organization through key performance indicators (e.g., New Products Output and Time to Market).

h. Establish meaningful, measurable goals for groups and individuals and continually review performance, recommend pay increases, and other actions to motivate and manage a high performing technical team.

7.Contribute and support Product Managers New Product Development from concept to customer approval; monitor and assess the impact of technology and market trends in the field and make recommendations or act accordingly.

8.Ensure best in class support to internal and external customers:

a. Provide technical guidance on issues that may occur during production and require support for manufacturing initiatives to improve yields and production efficiencies, including cost reductio n recommendations to meet Product Line budgets.

b. Provide oversight for technical communication with existing and prospective suppliers and ensuring we have complete, accurate and timely information to our supplies.

c. Partner with Marketing and Sales to ensure our Marketing and Sales team, and customers receive accurate and timely design collateral, application support, and problem resolution guidance from the engineering teams as and when required.

9.Ensure proper maintenance of requisite engineering laboratory notebooks and documentation, while working with Corporate Legal to ensure IP and patent activity is current and ongoing.

10.Other duties as assigned.

SCHEDULING AND PLANNING:

Must be able to lead multiple and complete projects on time and within the approved budget while evaluating resource requirements to meet priorities and program commitments.

BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Masters in Science in Engineering or proven equivalent experience.

EXPERIENCE: A demonstrated mastery of progressively responsible experience in the field of engineering management. International experience is desired. A thorough understanding of materials, processes, and engineering design associated with electrical, magnetic, and electromechanical products is required.

OTHER SKILLS: Must be detail-oriented and data-driven.
