- SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Applications Engineer takes instructions from the Senior Applications Engineer and is responsible for the development and realization of customized equipment and devices as part of the evolution of Bourns’ Electrification Laboratory. This includes the design and development of test PCBAs and reference designs for magnetic components. The Applications Engineer has a knowledge of isolated and non-isolated AC/DC and DC/DC power conversion using high power switching devices, EMI standards and EMC design. The position involves working with key stakeholders, especially in new product development and marketing.
II. DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES (End Results Expected):
- Design custom magnetics (inductors, transformers, EMI chokes)
- Prepare Engineering Specifications
- Cooperate with engineering teams in customers during custom design projects. Part of this involves summarizing calculations and simulations in PowerPoint presentations and presenting over Microsoft Teams.
- Testing of application boards in the applications lab
- Work with design engineers in other manufacturing locations to release new products.
- Contribute to the development of product specifications and requirements.
- Publish technical papers in journals, magazines and the Bourns Website
- PRINCIPAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
- Engineering, Marketing and Laboratory Technicians in Bourns Ireland
- Sales Force and FAE’s Europe
- PLM, and GM
- Production sites in Europe and Asia

Must possess the ability to effectively communicate, present and recommend ideas and solutions. Success comes from the ability to develop strong relationships with the “engineering group” internally and with our “customers”.

Oral:
Excellent English required to communicate instructions and present ideas, concepts and solutions to all levels of employees and customers. Any other language is an asset.
Written:
Excellent written skills in English required to issue instructions and present ideas, concepts, and solutions to all levels of employees and customers via letters, memos, graphs, charts, etc.

VI. BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical / Electrical and Electronic Engineering. A Master’s degree in Power Electronics would be an advantage.
Experience:
- Demonstrable experience in power electronics (industry or academia)
- Proficient in CAD PCB software such as Altium or similar
- Strong knowledge of electronic components and systems
- Schematic design to component level, PCB layout
- Ideally some software development using languages such as C, C#, VB. LabVIEW/MATLAB/Python would be an additional advantage
- Working knowledge of microcontroller-based embedded systems
- Familiarity with standard electronic lab equipment
