Job Description:

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The laboratory operator performs a supporting role to the mechanical engineering team, particularly in the practical aspects of sample building, design validation, and testing. The lab operator or technician would be the engineer's hands-on support, enabling them to:

     • Translate designs into physical prototypes.

     • Gather accurate and reliable test data.

     • Maintain a well-equipped and safe laboratory environment.

     • Allow the engineer to focus on the design and analysis aspects of their job.

 

DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES (End Results Expected): 
1. Building Prototypes: The technician would be responsible for physically constructing the magnetic component prototypes based on the engineer's design drawings and specifications. This includes: 

     • Winding coils. 
     • Assembling magnetic cores. 
     • Fabricating mechanical housings and supports. 

     • Applying insulation and coatings. 
2. Operating Equipment: They would operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as: 
     • Winding machines. 

     • Cutting, grinding and shaping tools. 
     • Soldering and welding equipment. 
     • 3D printers for rapid prototyping. 

3. Testing and Data Collection: 
     • Setting up Tests: The technician would assist in setting up and conducting various tests, 
including: 

          o Thermal testing (e.g., using thermocouples, thermal imaging cameras). 
          o Vibration and shock testing. 
          o Mechanical strength testing. 

          o Electrical testing related to thermal performance. 
     • Data Acquisition: They would collect and record test data, ensuring accuracy, and completeness. 
     • Operating Test Equipment: operate equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and environmental test chambers. 

     • Maintaining Test Equipment: Calibrating and maintaining test equipment to ensure accurate measurements. 
4. Material Handling and Preparation: 
     • Material Preparation: The technician would prepare materials for prototyping and testing, including cutting, shaping, and cleaning. 

     • Material Inventory: They would manage material inventory and ensure that necessary materials are available. 
5. Documentation and Reporting: 
     • Recording Test Results: They would document test results and observations, providing data for the engineer's analysis. 

     • Maintaining Lab Records: They would maintain accurate records of experiments, equipment maintenance, and material usage.
     • Creating Test Reports: Assisting the engineer in creating test reports. 
6. Lab Maintenance and Safety: 

     • Maintaining a Clean and Organized Lab: Ensuring a safe and efficient work environment. 
     • Following Safety Procedures: Adhering to all laboratory safety protocols. 
     • Equipment Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.

 

BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

High school diploma plus two years of college/technical school training in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent experience. Bachelor's degree preferred.

 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

     • Experience with hand soldering is an advantage.

     • Experience working with a microscope and other electrical test equipment would be an advantage.

 

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: 
To be self-disciplined and motivated in relation to safety, housekeeping, and time management. Ability to effectively communicate, present and recommend ideas and solutions. 

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

Excellent English required to communicate instructions and present ideas, concepts and solutions to all levels of employees. Excellent written skills in English required to create instructions and procedures when necessary.

 

SCHEDULING AND PLANNING:

To be accurate and consistent in the recording, interpretation, and implementation of work instructions.

 

EQUIPMENT OPERATED: 
     • Telephones, facsimile, personal computer, and printers. 

     • Soldering irons, 3D printers, grinding equipment, electrical test equipment, electrical measurement equipment 

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: 
Hands on work. Working with wire, ceramic cores, plastic materials.
